A 31-year-old man who was killed outside his Northeast Washington apartment Thursday night was a recent college graduate who was shot as he walked home from work, according to D.C. police.
Authorities identified the victim as Akinwole Olu Williams. Police said he was shot once in the chest about 11:40 p.m. in the 1000 block of 44th Street NE, about a half-mile from the Deanwood Metro station.
Officer Araz Alali, a police spokesman, said the victim had left work and was walking home from the Metro station when he was attacked. Detectives have not established a motive, he said.
Alali said Williams was taken to an area hospital and pronounced dead early Friday. No arrests have been made.
Victor Nakas, a spokesman for Catholic University of America, said that Williams first started taking classes at the school in 1999 and was enrolled off and on through 2012. Nakas said Williams graduated in December 2012 with a bachelor’s degree in interdisciplinary studies.
Nakas said the university will invite Williams’s parents or other relatives to the May commencement and present his diploma to them.
“We mourn the loss of Akinwole and remember him as a beloved member of the Catholic University community,” said the school’s president, John Garvey, in a statement. “As a community of faith, let us find comfort in the love of our Lord and the knowledge that our faith supports us in difficult times such as these.”
Anyone with information is urged to call D.C. police at 202-727-9099.
