Qatada will stay for another year as he fights deportation
Abu Qatada, the radical Muslim cleric, could stay in Britain for another year despite being jailed yesterday in the Home Office’s latest attempt to deport him.
Mr Qatada was arrested yesterday morning after Theresa May, the Home Secretary, concluded that Jordan had given sufficient assurances over his treatment to ensure his removal.
However, she admitted that it could still be “many months” before the terrorist suspect leaves Britain because he is able to appeal.
Successive governments have fought for more than a decade to deport Mr Qatada, and he has cost the taxpayer more than £1.5 million in legal bills and benefits.
He is likely to increase that bill by tens of thousands as he once again fights against his removal in domestic and European courts.
Mrs May told MPs she was confident she had enough assurances to allow for his deportation, including guarantees that no evidence obtained by torture will be used against him.
