Mass resignation looms in police over transfer to North

Mass resignation looms in the Nigerian Police Force following the transfer of policemen to the Northern part of the country.
Investigations revealed that more than 2,000 policemen are involved in the mass transfer from the Western part of the country to the North and vice versa.
Those affected by the mass transfer include policemen from the rank and file to the Chief Superintendent Police cadre.
It was gathered that the mass transfer of police officers is one of the strategies of the Acting Inspector General of Police, Mohammed Abubakar, to combat the dreaded sect, Boko Haram, which had targeted police stations and other government formations in the Northern part of the country.
It was gathered from impeccable sources that policemen in the Northern part of the country are alleged to have been compromised and as such have    jeopardised government’s efforts to tackle the dreaded sect.
Though the mass transfer is legitimate and compulsory for officers of such calling, most of those said to have been transferred are unhappy and scared and have begun desperate moves to stop their transfers, especially from Lagos State.
Also, others who have been unlucky to secure transfer back to the Western part of the country are said to have threatened to resign.
A prominent lawyer working with the police said she has been besieged by policemen to help effect their transfer from the North.
The source, who requested anonymity, said: “You cannot believe what is happening.
"These policemen transferred to the North from Lagos State have been coming to my office to help them effect their transfer back to Lagos.
"Some of them were weeping and kneeling down that they do not want to work in the North and when I asked them why, they said the police high command is sending them to an early grave.
"Some of them were lobbying me with money to help them talk to the IGP on their behalf.
"So, it is really a worrisome trend."
Most of the police officers who spoke on condition of anonymity based their rejection of the transfer to the insecurity in the North.
One of them told The Eagle Online: “Most of us that are being transferred  to the North are Yoruba, Igbo, Benue and other tribes while those they are bringing to the West are Hausas.
"Is it that the IGP wants the Yoruba policemen to be slaughtered by the Boko Haram sect?
"Why can’t the IGP allow the Northerners to remain in their state since they know the terrain and they can speak the language fluently.
"Most of our colleagues who went to the North have been killed because they cannot communicate.
"Some officers who will not get transferred back to Lagos have threatened to resign."
It can be recalled that there was a major shakeup in the police force in February where over 20 Commissioners of Police were transferred to different states in the country.
