Gwinnett Police have one suspect in custody after a shooting at a Norcross-area tax office

A man was shot and another is in custody after what appears to be an attempted robbery in incorporated office in  Norcross, according to Gwinnett County Police.

The shooting occurred just around 5 p.m. Monday at Tax Service Insurance, a business services and tax office located at 5627 Singleton Road, said Detective John Rowell in a press conference.

The suspect, Jeremy Williams, 20, attempted to rob the owner, 56-year-old Damien Ezekie, at gunpoint, according to a press release from Cpl. Jake Smith. There was a struggle and Williams allegedly shot Ezekie in the head.

The victim was transported to the hospital and is considered to be in critical condition. It is believed the Ezekie will recover, though, since he was conscious and speaking with police when they arrived.

"It's amazing," said Rowell. "I would guess that it didn't penetrate his skull, but witnesses said he was chasing the suspect through the parking lot."

Rowell said that police were able to catch the Williams from descriptions given from several people who called 911 after seeing the suspect run from the office. Officers in the area were able to apprehend someone matching the description just a few blocks from the Singleton building.

Rowell said that so far there isn't any connection between the suspect and the office, and it seems to be a random act.

"At this time, we don't know any motive besides the robbery," he added.

It's unclear if he came out with any money from the office, according to Rowell. Additionally, no gun has been recovered yet.

It is not believed that there is a second victim or second suspect.

Phil Milton, a nearby resident who was walking to a store near the incident location, said he saw the chase happen.

"I saw the [victim] when he came back and sat down," said Milton. "[Police] were trying to keep him calm until the ambulance came by."
