WOODBRIDGE, Va. --
Police in Wheeling, W.Va., today identified a man shot Friday night in a crowded part of the city as Omoniyi Bakare, a former Hylton High School football player.
Bakare, 22, graduated from Hylton in 2007 and played at Fairmont State University in West Virginia. Police said he still attended school there. His parents live in Woodbridge.
Police say Bakare was shot inside a black Dodge Avenger about 11:30 p.m. Friday on National Road inWheeling and somehow escaped out of the car in front of a car wash. There were several witnesses, according to reports from television stations in Wheeling.
"That's a pretty crowded area for that time of night," said Wheeling Deputy Police Chief Martin Kimball.
Witnesses heard a gunshot, then saw a person roll from the Avenger and onto the street.
Medics performed CPR at the scene, but Bakare died on the way to the hospital. He was shot near the heart,Kimball said.
Kimball said police want to talk to a 20-year-old Columbus, Ohio man in connection with the shooting. Darrian Tyrone Cordell, aka "Dube," is wanted by the U.S. Marshals Service and Columbus police on charges of drug trafficking and possession of a firearm by a felon.
In Bakare's senior year of high school football at Hylton, he rushed for 1,473 yards and 19 touchdowns. In 2007, Bakare was red-shirted at Fairmon State, In 2008 at Fairmont State he rushed for a team-high 713 yards and six touchdowns and in 2009 he was second on the team in rushing with 396 yards and three touchdowns.
