KLUANG (THE STAR/ASIA NEWS NETWORK) - Two convicts who had each served more than 30 years in jail are now free to go home to their loved ones after they were given a royal pardon by the Sultan of Johor on the first day of Ramadan.

Mr Safwan, who was sentenced to death for drug trafficking more than 32 years ago, and Mr Samsuddin, who was sentenced 36 years ago to life imprisonment for a firearms crime, were among eight prisoners released on Saturday.

'It was mental torture for me as every day could have been my last day on earth,' said Mr Safwan, 58, who was found guilty by the High Court for trafficking drugs under Section 39(b) of the Dangerous Drug Act 1957.

'I felt like I had been reborn when informed I was being pardoned,' he said when met at the Kluang Prison yesterday, thankful to Allah that he had been given a second chance at life.
