.Boko Haram, 9 ex-IGPs storm Louis Edet House

.Boko Haram, 9 ex-IGPs storm Louis Edet House

By MOLLY KILETE, Abuja

Nine former Inspectors General of Police (IGPs), yesterday stormed the Police Force Headquarters in Abuja to discuss on the current security challenges facing the country and proffer solution. The nine former Inspectors General of Police, include, Muhammadu Gambo Jimeta, M.D. Yusuf, Sunday Adewusi, Ibrahim Coomasie, Musiliu Smith and Tafa Balogun. Others are Mike Okiro, Sunday Ehindero, and Aliyu Attah.

They were at the Louis Edet House on what they term a solidarity visit to the acting Inspector General of Police (IGP), Mohammed Abubakar, to share their wealth of experience with him on how to tackle the Boko Haram insurgency, kidnapping and other forms of violence and criminality that had bedeviled the nation. They were also there to find ways on how to improve the performance of personnel especially in the area of training to boost their performance in their day-to-day activities and dealings with the public. Speaking to newsmen shortly after the meeting, the retired Inspectors General of Police, who took turns to address journalists, lamented over the new wave of crime and terrorism that sprang up in some parts of the country that had claimed thousands of innocent Nigerians and destroyed property worth million, saying such crime never existed during their time.

One of the former IGP, Sunday Adewusi, while answering reporters questions, noted that terrorism was not peculiar to Nigeria alone as it was spreading all over the world, but said government needed to do more, especially in the area of modern training and equipment to enable policemen to excel in their operations. He stressed that for the police to move forward and adequately tackle the problem of insecurity, question such as, “are the policemen of today the policemen of our own time? Do they have the same type of training that we had during our own time?” must be addressed. He said: “When we rub minds together, we will then be able to sort out the problem.

If we don’t do that, the problem will go on increasing daily and as you know nowadays, the rate of crime, not only in Nigeria, all over the world is very high and maybe growing more and more.” People say the causes are over population, lack of employment and wants. And when you have this, it encourages crime and when you have a crime, the problem falls on the poor policeman who has to deal with them. “This is the modern time, you may regard us as aging, but many things were good the past which we want you people to copy. On his part, Alhaji Muhammadu Gambo Jimeta, said: “We are here to show solidarity with the IG, and to share with him, his current endeavors in tackling the security situation in the country and for us to come together is a source of joy to everyone of us.

May we say for once, the police has come out to show their relics. To talk about what we have discussed, we discussed on a wide range of issues affecting the police force. Irrespective of the act that there is a lot of misunderstanding of police, we want to reassure the IG that he has the complete support of all of us and we appreciate what he has been doing so far hoping that by the end of it all that we are doing now, we will be able to remove any area of doubts about the police force and the way and manner they are perceived by various groups in the society,” he said. Also speaking, Alhaji Ibrahim Coomassie, said they would continue to work as a team and proffer solutions to how to tackle insecurity, not only to the IGP, but also to government to end the unnecessary shedding of innocent blood.
