AMERICAN GOLD: Putting an exclamation point on a dramatic comeback American swimmer Dana Vollmer set a world record and won the gold medal in the women’s 100 meter butterfly.
Vollmer had failed to make the team in 2008 but revamped her training and became a devotee of playing in the water.
With a time of 55.98, Vollmer becomes the first woman to go under 56 seconds.
Vollmer said she knew she was slow off the start but she also knows that her strength is the final 50 meters. “I rely on my strengths,” she said. “I just tried to remain calm.”
She added that she knew of her lead in the final meters but wasn’t aware how fast she was going. “What an incredible thing to do it in front of this crowd.”
