PRESIDENT Goodluck Jonathan met with governors of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) states in State House on Saturday evening, appare
ntly to wade into what seems to be a crisis of confidence between the governors and the National Chairman of the party, Alhaji Bamanga Tukur. The problem between the governor and the party boss became clear on Saturday when most of them stayed away from the launch of The Global Village, a biography of Alhaji Tukur, an occasion graced by President Jonathan.
Only Governors Patrick Yakowa (Kaduna), Theodore Orji (Abia), Isa Yuguda (Bauchi) and deputy governor of Katsina State, Abdulahi Faskari, were present at the occasion which took place in the Congress Hall of Transcorp Hilton Hotel. Sunday Tribune learnt that the governors may not be comfortable with the form Alhaji Tukur's reconciliation, reformation and rebuilding programme in the party has taken which has seen him make overtures to former members of the party many of whom are not in the good books of the various state governors.
Party source revealed that some of the governors were unhappy because they believe that the national chairman was moving too fast, though they are not aversed to the idea of reconciliation which the National Executive Committee (NEC) of the PDP had previously approved. Even though the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Dr. Reuben Abati, told State House correspondents after the meeting that lasted for about 30 minutes that it was a prelude to the hosting of the Paralympians who did the nation proud, it was gathered that the president was taken aback when the governors failed to show up at the book launch even when most of them were in Abuja.
“If it was, indeed, a prelude to the hosting of the athletes, governors of other parties would have been involved,” the source volunteered. Governors present at the meeting were Rotimi Amaechi (Rivers), Isa Yuguda (Bauchi), Idris Wada (Kogi), Theodore Orji (Abia), Patrick Yakowa (Kaduna), Godswill Akpabio (Akwa Ibom), Danbaba Suntai (Taraba) and Martin Elechi (Ebonyi).
Some state governors were represented by their deputies. Among them are Ignatius Dantong (Plateau), Abdulahi Faskari (Katsina), Ahmed Gumel (Jigawa), Tha'anda Rubianu (Gombe), Gboribiogha John Jona (Bayelsa) and Abdulahi Ghanduje (Kano).
