BBC Undercover Investigation: pharmacies selling
drugs for cash.
|
UK: The BBC have conducted an undercover investigation that has caught
registered pharmacies acting like 'street drug dealers'. Using hidden
cameras, the investigation for 'BBC Inside Out' caught pharmacy staff
handing out drugs like Valium and Temazepam without a prescription or a
single question being asked.
The investigation revealed that 'rogue pharmacists' were willing to sell drugs such as Viagra for 20 times the genuine price.
Undercover reporters were able to purchase several hundred Valium
tablets and a large assortment of other POM (prescription only
medication).
In UK Pharmacies are regulated by the General Pharmaceutical Council
(GPhC) and the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency
(MHRA).
It is believed that only a tiny fraction of cases are ever investigated
and that authorities have adopted a 'buyer beware' attitude. A former
member of staff at the MHRA has stated that "there was a culture of
complacency and lack of training. Many of the investigations were run by
people who wouldn't know Valium from Viagra...when people reported
concerns they were given a leaflet explaining how to be more vigilant".
