I was asked to pay bribes if I wanted to represent Nigeria at the Olympics – Obiekwe

With the dust yet to settle on Nigeria’s abysmal performance at the London 2012 Olympics, allegations have started making the rounds, that some athletes were asked to give bribes, if they wished to be taken to the Olympics.
An amateur marathon runner, Esther Obiekwe, claimed that bribes were requested from her,in order for her to be part of Team Nigeria that was at the London 2012 Olympic Games.
Obiekwe alleged that virtually all the athletes Nigeria took to the last Olympics, paid their way into the team, and that the Nigeria Olympic Committee(NOC) specifically asked her for gratifications which she refused.
Owing to Obiekwe’s damning revelations, the National Sport Commission(NSC) set up an investigative panel to look into the allegations coming from the banker, who took to Marathon running out of her passion for the sport.
The investigative panel is made up of Justice Danlami Sanchi as the chairman of the panel, and former Nigerian athlete,Dr. Gloria Obajimi as a member.
Obiekwe is expected to appear before the panel on Monday, and the outcome of the panel’s investigations would be known later this week.
