CHIME RETURNS

Enugu State governor Sullivan Chime yesterday arrived at the AkanuIbiam International Airport, Enugu, to a tumultuous welcome by thousands of his supporters. He had spent more than four months abroad due to ill-health.

As he stepped out of the aircraft marked M. Betty 328 which brought him from Abuja at 3:05 pm, the governor who looked healthy was surrounded by many of his admirers with some of them attempting to carry him shoulder high but for the intervention of hordes of security men around the tarmac.

The governor, who spotted a cream white jacket, blue stripped shirt and a pair of black trousers, waved endlessly to the excited crowd who thronged the airport to welcome him.

He was received by the deputy governor, Mr. Sunday Onyebuchi, his wife Nneka, members of the State Executive Council (SEC), local government chairmen and traditional rulers, amidst jubilation.

His return yesterday ended several weeks of speculations about his whereabouts and health status.

Governor Chime left the country in September 2012 after handing over the affairs of government to his deputy, Onyebuchi.
The governor did not make any speech at the airport.

The state commissioner for information, Mr. ChuksUgwuoke, had since then maintained that the governor travelled abroad to spend his accumulated leave, but his long absence from his duty post generated controversy about his real reason for travelling abroad.

The media was thereafter awash with reports that Governor Chime was undergoing treatment for an undisclosed illness in a London hospital. It became clear that all was not well with the Enugu State governor when his colleagues from the states of Rivers (Rotimi Amaechi ), Akwa Ibom (Godswill Akpabio) and Benue (Gabriel Suswan) visited him in London.

After the airport ceremony, Governor Chime was driven to the Government House, Enugu, in a convoy of vehicles where he was received by several dancing groups.
