They weren't wearing seatbelts properly. Five others were injured in the crash but are expected to survive.
The chain-reaction crash occurred at about 1 p.m. Sunday on Westbound Interstate 94 near 49th Avenue.
According to the State Patrol the crash happened when a Jeep and Honda Odyssey hit. Both cars swerved off to the side of the interstate.
The Honda swerved back into the roadway and hit the minivan. The minivan hit the center median and overturned several times.
Lt. Eric Roeske says all of the victims were in the minivan. According to troopers, four people were ejected from the vehicle. Investigators believe they weren't wearing their seatbelts.
The State Patrol released the names of the five people who were injured in the crash. They are identified as 51-year-old Akinbowale Barbington, 61-year-old Oluremi Ayodele Ogundare, 15-year-old Fisayo Abigail Barbington, 12-year-old Faith Barbington and 5-year-old Tobi Barbington. They are all expected to survive.
The State Patrol says 18-year-old Casie Pawlik of Brooklyn Park was driving a Jeep Patriot involved in the crash, and 38-year-old Roni Oberuomo of Brooklyn Center was driving a Honda Odyssey involved in the crash.
Both Pawlik and Oberuomo were uninjured in the crash. Investigators say Pawlik's car apparently left the freeway and traveled up an embankment, through a chain link fence at the top of the 49th Avenue exit ramp.
Her car did not hit another car after leaving the highway, according to the Minnesota State Patrol.
Authorities are still investigating, but Roeske says they do not believe alcohol or drugs were a factor.
Westbound I-94 closed following the crash for more than three hours. It reopened around 4:30 p.m.
A memorial fund was set up for the family involved in this crash.
