Yesterday afternoon, unknown gunmen in Maiduguri, believed to be members of Boko Haram, kidnapped respected elder statesman, 87-year old Alhaji Shettima Ali Monguno at the Mafoni Jumaat Mosque after he performed Friday prayers.
The kidnappers, who have contacted the family, are demanding the release of some of their members who are being held by security forces.
At the mosque, the abductors forced the octogenarian, a former federal Minister, into their car and sped away, shooting into the air to scare away worshipers.
Most residents, angered by the brazen seizure of the old man, prayed for his safe release but also for Almighty Allah to punish the perpetrators.
New information has now emerged that the suspected Boko Haram hitmen arrived for the operation on a tricycle popularly known in Nigeria as “Keke NAPEP.”
A source at the Mafoni Jumaat mosque where he was snatched said there were three operatives and that, alighting from the tricycle, they proceeded into the mosque. After snatching the old man, they zoomed off in a car.
The source added that after the Friday prayers, the three young men approached his car and brought guns, and suddenly all other occupants of his car came out and they zoomed off with Monguno, who is aged and not physically strong.
Last week, the JTF in Maiduguri announced that the dreaded sect has set up a new squad which would engage in kidnapping
