A top British Hotel, the Marriott group, was last weekend compelled for the first time in its 84 year history to prepare and supply African dishes to guests.
This happened during the just ended Africa Day celebrations in Northampton.
The Marriott was transformed by the Zim Women Association in Northampton who managed to Africanise the British company’s operations. The interior design from the main hallway were turned into a virtual African pathway with exquisite cow hide artefacts, spear and shields tilting canvassing the walls from side to side. As one entered the main hall where the Africa day function was being held, immediately before the eyes were solid “haris” (clay pots) made of colourful clay, shining the beauty and essence of Africanness.
The food buffet provided by the hotel was of all sorts of spicy “ekhaya” (home) edibles including jellof  rice and ….”nyama yemombe” (beef). When approached a waiter standing behind the large buffet pots told ZimEye his team had pushed itself to develop a new skill of cooking thanks to the Rutendo Nyatsine-led Northampton Zim Women.
“It was great to prepare it yes, with a little struggle but their guidance was superb,” he said.IMG_0280
The table-tops were not the rigid James Bond type as is usually seen in typical English functions. No. they were neatly laced glittering with shiny stones somewhat speaking of Africa’s rich mineral wealth. Several people interviewed by ZimEye spoke of their excitement to be at the function.
I came over here to celebrate Africa, but little did I know I was going to be lifted into Africa. Having been away from home for 4 years, this event really lights up every memory thought and feeling of Africa,” said one Susan , a resident of neighbouring Wellingborough.
The event was also graced by loud museve music celebrated in dance by several artists from in an around Northampton.
