EXHIBITS POLICE PRESENTED AS HAVING BEEN FOUND ON THE SHOT STUDENT.
DPO Carol Afegbai who pulled the trigger has been suspended by the police.
Governor Adams Oshiomhole ordered an enquiry into the incident, Body was exhumed , Gun shots to the Chest found not legs as Policewoman claimed
The Divisional Police Officer (DPO) in charge of Ogida police division in Benin, Mrs. Carol Afegbai, a Chief Superintendent of Police, who fired the shot, had alleged that she shot the victim on his leg. She claimed that Ibrahim was shot in self defence when he was asked to stop by her men at about 11pm that night, but rather than stop, he brought out a hand gun and attempted to open fire on them.
Contrary to her claims, an eye witness at the exhumation of the deceased body, Rev David Ugolor, the Executive Director of African Network for Environmental and Economic Justice (ANEEJ) said: “I was at the cemetery where the corpse was exhumed and I followed them down to Stella Obasanjo Hospital and was there when his body was washed. The police were there, family members of the boy were there. The police pathologist and the one contracted by the family were there and the family’s lawyer was there. There is no way the police can deny that the boy was shot in the chest.”
Consequently, the Nigeria Police has redeployed the Divisional Police Officer of Ogida Police Station, Carol Afegbai from the post. The police announced on Friday that the re-deployment was to allow for a thorough investigation of the shooting.
The Edo State Commissioner of Police, Folusho Adebanjo, said on Friday that, “it might be too early for anyone to dismiss either the claim of the police or that of the bereaved family.
“In order to demonstrate the Edo State Police management team’s desire for justice and fairness as it concerns this case, the case file has been forwarded to the Director of Public Prosecutions for legal advice.”
Meanwhile, the Public Relations Officer of the University of Benin, Harrison Osarenren, said though Mr. Momodu was a matriculated student of the school, he last did his registration for the 2009/ 2010 session. “The university rule says that refusal to register makes you a non-student. Technically speaking, I would not say he is a student. He is not our student for now,”
