After serving 20 years of a 27 year sentence, a man who murdered a British Man in Florida received 40 more years added to his prison sentence Thursday. Audra Akins, 34, who was only 14 when he gunned down Gary Colley in 1993, appeared in Jefferson County Court in front of Judge Karen Gievers when he received the additional time.
“Aundra Akins was sentenced to 40 years to run consecutively to his previous sentence of 27 years for the murder of Gary Colley,” stated a court official at Jefferson County Court.
Gary Colley’s girlfriend, Margarent Jagger, was also injured in the botched robbery that ended in murder two decades ago.
“I didn’t think I would have to come back again,” Jagger said to WCTV.
“Both He and I have served time in different ways. My sentence will never end.”
Akins’ mother and extended family were present during the trial, pleading with the judge to lighten up on the now remorseful and rehabilitated killer.
“I understand what he did was wrong. I know he won’t be no trouble to anybody,” pleaded Akins’ mother at the judge’s bench.
Gary Colley, originally from West Yorkshire, was shot and killed in a motorway by the teen. Akins was said to have shot Gary in attempt to get accepted into a neighborhood gang. Despite Akins’ disturbing past, the once delinquent felon has since attained a GED qualification, attends Christian retreat programs and has acquired trade certificates, all while has been imprisoned.
“I’m not the kid I was before. I am a grown man and I really want to make a difference and I hope you can find it in your heart to forgive me,” pleaded Akins in court.
Judge Gievers sympathy was not evident when the man was given the new sentence. There isn’t any word on what the reason was behind the additional time in prison.
Should Akins have been given another chance in society, seeing that he was an under-developed youth with no sense of guidance at the time of the attack?
