Capitalizing on a recent string of press and conservative acclaim, the Duck Dynasty family is teaming up with a gun manufacturer to offer a new line of firearms.
Mossberg guns announced Thursday that they have entered into an agreement to begin manufacturing and selling a line of guns with Duck Commander, the company started by the Robertson family that stars in the popular reality television show set in Louisiana. The line includes a dozen different models for adults and youths, including nine different shotguns, two semiautomatic rifles, and a semiautomatic pistol.
“The long-term agreement with the Robertson family and the hugely-popular Duck Commander franchise includes a focus on the family’s passion of waterfowl hunting, promotion of the shooting sports, and family values as well as a series of Mossberg ‘Duck Commander’ firearms,” Mossberg said in a press release.
The Duck Commander online store already sells hunting accessories, including lanyards and ammunition storage, and the family company has endorsed Mossberg products on its site as well.
The announcement follows a number of controversial statements from the show’s star and patriarch, Phil Robertson, including a high-profile GQ interview in which he made homophobic comments and spoke about “blacks” with whom he worked on cotton fields being happier in “pre-entitlement” days.
Those comments, in which Robertson spoke at length about the bible and sin, and compared homosexuality to bestiality, led A&E to temporarily suspend him from the show. The network reversed that decision in an announcement made late last week, following criticism from a number of prominent Republicans including Sarah Palin, Texas Sen. Ted Cruz, and Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal.
Robertson more recently came under fire for comments made on video encouraging men to marry underage girls.
