She Graduated Top of Her Class
Washington earned a Presidential Arts Scholarship to attend George Washington University and graduated Magna Cum Laude and Phi Beta Kappa from the school in 1998 with a degree in Performance Studies. After she gave the commencement address her earlier this year at her alma mater, she was awarded an honorary Doctorate of Fine Arts.
She Has Director Skills
Washington directed the video for Common’s single “I Want You” from his 2007 acclaimed album “Finding Forever”. She also makes an appearance as his obsessed/psychotic ex-girlfriend. The same video boasts an ensemble cast with Alicia Keys, Serena Williams, and Kanye West. Of the experience, Washington said she “looooved directing,” and was so engulfed in it that she didn’t look at any acting scripts for three weeks because she was locked in the editing room putting the video together.
She Made TV History
Washington is the first black lead actress on a network drama in 40 years, and only the second in TV history. The first was Teresa Graves as an undercover cop on Get Christie Love way back in 1974.
She’s Ivy League Smart
Beauty and brains are two words that easily describe this “Scandal” star. Washington was accepted to Yale University and Dartmouth College, but declined them both. Instead, she attended George Washington University on an acting scholarship.
She Doesn’t Drink Coffee or Alchohol
While her onscreen alter ego Olivia Pope may have a nightly glass of wine requirement,  Washington says she’s much more reserved. “I actually live quietly,” she tells the NY Post. “Work hard. Get bored easily. Don’t drink. Who needs those empty calories?” She also told US Weekly that she doesn’t drink coffee either. This woman has got some serious discipline.
She Does a Tina Turner Impression She’s Proud Of
The poised actress revealed to US Weekly that she does know how to cut loose and get funky. Not only does she love to dance but, she also says with great confidence, “I have a Tina Turner impression that I’m very proud of since the age of 9.” Wonder if they could work that one into the Scandal script.
She Can Sing
” While attending the Spence School, I was in a nine-girl a cappella singing group called Triple Trio,” she said.
She Loves HBO’s ‘Game of Thrones’
Washington may be busy working hard on her own hit TV show —and looking fabulous while she’s at it– but she makes time to watch the  drama “Game of Thrones” and admits to being a “huge” fan.
She Keeps Something From Every Character She’s Played
Washington has said she tries to keep a small memento to remind her of each character she portrays, such as an item of wardrobe or piece of furniture from the house her character lived in.
She’s Loves Popcorn And Pineapple
Washington may watch what she eats, and stave away from alcohol and coffee but that doesn’t mean she doesn’t have her own unique obsessions. For her, it’s popcorn. The health-conscious star told Women’s Health that she “could sorta live on popcorn.” Her love for the snack even influenced the “Scandal” writers to give her character the same obsession.  Washington said, “I don’t mind because I get to eat popcorn at work.” She also says she is obsessed with pineapple.
She Gives Her Parents Gifts on Her Birthday
While the majority of us enjoy our birthdays with gifts given to us, Washington tells US Weekly that every year she gets her parents a gift for her birthday. She is obviously grateful for every year she has been blessed to see.
If She Wasn’t An Actress She’d Be a Teacher
Washington told Women’s Health, “Either an elementary school teacher or a yoga teacher. Both of which I did when I was living in New York pursuing a career in acting. I liked doing both of those things very much.” She was a substitute teacher but had to give it up after the success of “Save the Last Dance” because, she says, “the students were like ‘Chenille is substituting.’”
She Went to The Same Bronx Boys & Girls Club as Jennifer Lopez
Kips Bay Boys & Girls Club in the Bronx, N.Y. has a reputation for producing Club members who are achievers in the performing arts – and Washington is a shining example. What many people don’t know is that Lopez also attended the same Boys & Girls Club and fine-tuned her performing skills there.
She’s Named After a County In Ireland
Washington is named after a a county in Ireland, located in the South-West Region and is also part of the province of Munster. It is named after the pre-Gaelic tribe who lived in part of the present county.
She paid homage to her “name place” on St. Patrick’s Day on Twitter saying: “Happy St Patrick’s Day tweeples. (I’m named after County Kerry. True story!)”
She’s Half Jamaican
Washington has said that her mother is from a “mixed-race background but from Jamaica, so she is partly English and Scottish and native American, but also descended from African slaves in the Caribbean.
