Governor of the Central Bank Nigeria, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi has said he is not leaving office on March 31st as widely reported because as the governor of the nation’s apex bank, his tenure expires on June 1, 2014.
Sanusi who had in recent times been in the news over a controversial $50 billion in oil proceeds by the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), said this at a meeting between him and the entire staff of the Central Bank at the corporation’s Headquarters in Abuja on Wednesday.
Against reports in the media that he has been asked to proceed on a pre-retirement leave, Sanusi declared that he is not leaving office on March 31st, adding that his mandate expires on June 1 and therefore would remain in office untill then.
He wondered why he would be asked to proceed on a pre-retirement leave when he never applied for one, adding that whoever will be appointed to replace him in March will have to work with him till June 1st when he will officially leave office.
The CBN governor had in November advocated for the announcement of his successor at least two to three months to the expiration of his tenure so that everybody knows who that person is, what the viewsare and so people prepare accordingly.
It would be recalled that President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua nominated Sanusi as Governor of the CentralBank of Nigeria on June 1, 2009 and his appointment was confirmed by the Senate on June 3, 2009. Hence his five year tenure is scheduled to end on June 3rd 2014.
Abusidiqu.com recalls that Sanusi’s predecessor, Professor Charles Soludo was not asked to proceed on pre-retirement leave when his tenure was nearing completion. He left office on May 29th, though a CBN source said it was because Soludo was hoping he would be appointed for a second term.
Sanusi Lamido who took time to reel out his achievements to staffs at the meeting said he has achieved to a score of 100% what he had set out to do for the Central Bank and the Nigerian economy.
He said he has no apology to offer anyone for what he has done in his capacity as the governor of the Central Bank and holds no grudge with anybody.
