British Woman Jailed In Caribbean For Killing Husband

JAILED: Reyes with her husband when they got married
A BRITISH woman has been sentenced to 12 years imprisonment in the Caribbean island Dominican Republic for killing her husband in a car crash.
Nicole Reyes, a former travel rep from Rumney Wales, was yesterday (Feb 4) handed the prison sentence after judges convicted her of the voluntary manslaughter of her husband Jorge in July 2012.
Reyes, 38, was driving home from a night out on the island next to her coconut water salesman husband Jorge, who was driving his motorbike alongside. The wife hit his motorbike, leaving him dead.
Reyes insisted he had swerved to avoid an oncoming car and hit her by accident - but local police in the Caribbean accused her of murder.
Reyes first visited the island on holiday before taking a holiday rep job with Thomas Cook, where she met her Jorge in 2006. The couple married in 2007 and had what was described as a happy relationship until the crash in July 2012.
Parents of the Reyes, Jeannette and Mike Clements flew out to the island for the two-and-a-half hour court hearing and called it a "miscarriage of justice".
Mrs Clements, 62, will now appeal the ruling and will meet Reyes’ lawyers today (Feb 5).
Clements said she felt "totally sick" when the sentence was announced.
She told the Daily Mail: “For someone to know their child was guilty would be bad enough but knowing she's innocent, it doesn't make sense.”
