ST. LOUIS -- In the wake of defensive end Michael Sam's public announcement Sunday that he is gay, social media exploded, including an overwhelmingly supportive response from his teammates at Missouri, where Sam was a unanimous All-American and the SEC's co-Defensive Player of the Year. One of Sam's teammates, however, didn't exactly fall in line.
Using Twitter, tight end Eric Waters offered a viewpoint that questioned many of his teammates' sincerity on social media Sunday.
Waters, a senior last season, was also one of Sam's roommates. So he is closer to this situation than most.
Predictably, Waters' tweet attracted some attention.
Waters, though, didn't back down. He followed it up with two more tweets.
Sam's announcement came in advance of the NFL Scouting Combine later this month. He led the SEC in sacks (11 1/2) and tackles for loss (19) last season and is projected by many scouts to be a mid-round draft pick.
