Lagos State Police Command said on Thursday its men have swooped on a notorious bank robbery gang, killing three of the members, while four were captured alive.
The names of the arrested suspects were given as Jonathan Nsirim, aged 36 years, Tajudeen Dosunmu (aka Dr), aged 65 years, Isaiah Willie (aka Pastor), aged 40, and Tairu Kereem, also aged 40.
The gang members who died during exchange of gunfire with operatives of the Special Anti Robbery Squad (SARS) are 34-year-old Daniel Onuoha (aka General), 35-year-old Eyo Bassey and Confidence Saviour, aged 30 years.
The police said a large quantity of arms, ammunition and various instruments used in breaking into banks and ATMs during operations were recovered during the encounter with the gang members.
Lagos State Police Commissioner, Umar Manko, paraded the captured suspects before newsmen in Lagos on Thursday.
He described them as deadly, saying they have killed a number of policemen in the state and carted away their riffles.
According to Manko, 12 AK47 rifles, two K2 rifles, 30 AK47 magazines, one pump action gun, one police walkie-talkie, one hammer, one cutter and eight gas cylinders were recovered from the hoodlums.
He added that a bank ATM was destroyed by the robbers.
The police chief also displayed all the arms, ammunition and other equipment recovered from the suspects.
He said the gang members on November 16, 2013 at about 1.00 a.m. stormed Access Bank Plc branch in the Ayobo area of Lagos with the intention to burgle and rob money from the bank’s ATM.
He said policemen from Ayobo Division led by Longnus Amuzie, an ASP, who is now dead, responded to the distress call but were ambushed by the robbers who opened fire on the patrol vehicle and killed three policemen, including Amuzie while others sustained injuries.
Manko revealed that two AK47 rifles belonging to the dead policemen were taken away by the armed robbers.
In another robbery attack, the police boss revealed that a gun battle ensued between the SARS team and the armed robbers on November 20, 2013 at Akano Street, Ilasamaja, adding that at the end, two of the suspected robbers were fatally wounded.
He said deadly weapons were recovered by the police during the operation too.
Manko noted that as a follow up to the case, operational base of the robbers was traced to a rented apartment at Ajibode Close, Iyana Ipaja, where large quantity of weapons were recovered.
He added that through diligent investigation and deployment of advance technology driven investigation by SARS team four bank robbery suspects were arrested.
All the arrested suspects, according to him, confessed to the Ayobo Access Bank robbery of November 16, 2013, First Bank, Idimu, ATM robbery of June 20, 2013, Zenith Bank, Malu Road, Ajegunle, robbery in May 2012 and Diamond Bank, Pen Cinema, robbery among many others.
