Some United States-based Nigerian groups have announced plans to protest First Lady Patience Jonathan’s upcoming visit to the US.
The first lady is billed to visit the US for an award by the University of Valparaiso, Indiana, in recognition of her contributions to ‘Women and Children’.
“We dare the first lady to come to Indiana for the award, we have chosen to echo the sentiments of Nigerians back home who despair due to the extreme sacrifices they have been forced to bear while leaders feed on the nation’s resources and allocate to themselves obscene privileges and perks,” a director of one of the groups, Chinedu Izeze, said.
According to a release, another senior member of the Nigerian Students, Youths and Professionals in the US said protest march involving over twenty five groups would be staged should the first lady undertake the visit.
“We are protesting vociferously this wasteful, misplaced and ill-advised visit.Unjustifiable gallivanting is a reflection of the waste and corruption that the Nigerian government has come to epitomize, even at a time when our daughters are missing, citizens killed daily,” the member said.
Several groups are also said to be planning to sign a letter asking the school to reconsider the plan to give any award to the first lady, said to have been organised by a lady believed to have arranged several award ceremonies for influential Nigerians.
