Minimah Orders Audit Of Army’s Weapons, Others

The Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen Keneth Minimah, has issued a directive to all military formations in the country to audit all equipment and materials in their custody.

The Director, Army Public Relations, Brig. Gen. Olajide Laleye, said during a press briefing in Abuja on Tuesday that the Army authorities decided to initiate the equipment and material audit to identify and remove logistics bottlenecks that could hamper the ongoing operation against the insurgents in the North East.

He said that the exercise would focus on identification of areas where equipment and materials were ‘in short supply, unserviceable or even obsolete.’

The Army Spokesman said that the authorities would also ensure strict compliance with the Nigerian Army Maintenance Policy, in order to ensure optimal utilization of equipment.

Laleye said that the major preoccupation was the emergence of a Nigerian Army that could effective handle long operations in defence of the country and the citizenry.

He said that the leadership of the Army had advised all officers and soldiers of the service to resist provocation from the members of the public stressing that while it was difficult to maintain security, it was easy to criticize the activities those in charge of securing the society.

Laleye said that the ongoing campaign against the insurgents and other operations in all the states of the Federation was putting ‘enormous pressure on the personnel and resources of the Nigerian Army.’

He also urged the members of the public to complement the efforts of the soldiers who according to him, could not be found everywhere at the same time, by volunteering necessary information to the security forces.

The Army Spokesman also said that the COAS also directed the immediate promotion of 296 personnel of the Nigerian Army for displaying ‘uncommon gallantry’ in repelling an attack on a military formation in Maiduguri.

The rampaging members of the Boko Haram had attacked the 21 Armoured Brigade of the Nigerian Army also known as Giwa Barracks, in March 15, 2014, but the attack was repelled by Special Forces who killed many of the insurgents.

He also said that the Army authorities had also taken steps to alleviate the suffering of family members of injured and deceased soldiers involved in the ongoing military operations.

According to him, the Army would henceforth sustain the family of soldiers killed in battle until the entitlement of such soldiers were paid.

He also said that as part of the effort to implement the directive, all the personnel had been directed to update the documentation and record of their next-of-kins.

It was also stated that injured personnel whose situations were deserving of foreign medical attention would be flown out of the country for treatment.

He stated also that the Army had established dedicated wards at the Nigerian Army Reference Hospital, Kaduna, to give special medical services to injured soldiers.
