Former Nigeria Minister of Petroleum, Tam David-West, has advised President Jonathan to honourably step aside as president, if the search for the 276 girls abducted from Government Secondary School, Chibok, Borno State, produces no positive result.
In an interview with Sunday Independent, the ex-minister urged the president to take a cue from the South Korean Prime Minister, Chung Hong-won, who tendered his resignation following a boat mishap that claimed the lives of over 300 persons last month.
According to David-West, “Jonathan should have resigned. Jonathan is the chief security officer of the country where billions of naira is voted every year for security then a group of people formed themselves under insurgency and carry away your citizens and you cannot find them, he would have resigned long ago.
“I expect Jonathan to have made a good speech thanking the foreign power for coming to help us, but as a president of the country, I failed to act at the right time.
“Therefore I resign as president of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and promise to give the necessary support to the countries that are helping us. “Honestly, I prayed that the girls should come back, but I am not optimistic that they could get back the 200 girls and if that happens then Nigeria is in for a great trouble.
“Jonathan has no business remaining in Aso Rock making speeches that does not impress me and the country”.
He berated the Federal Government for the manner with which it treated the incident heaping majority of the blame on the president for his slow response to ignite a rescue plan for the girls has limited the chances of finding the girls.
The Professor of Virology said government should have swung into action the moment the report of the abduction got to it and take necessary measures to limit the movement of the abductors within Nigeria.
He added, “If this government is a responsive and responsible type, Jonathan wouldn’t wait that so long before doing something.
“For a long time he did not say anything only for him to wake up one day from his slumber and make an unacceptable statement.
“I respect the office of the President, but I don’t respect the president’s nonsense.
“Jonathan has the best security personnel in the continent with a lot of billions voted for security every year therefore, the best thing to do was to ordered for the closure of the borders twenty four hours when the girls were declared missing.
“Look, Buhari closed our borders against petroleum smugglings why can’t Jonathan close the borders against human trafficking?
“President Jonathan acted very slow and uncommitted in a way he may be committed in his heart but we didn’t see that in his action”.
