Amaechi: Importing Boko Haram to the South--PDP

The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Rivers State Chapter, has accused Rivers State Governor, Chibuike Amaechi, of backing and sponsoring Boko Haram activities in the South-East and South-South zones of Nigeria.
The allegation was contained in a press release signed by Jerry Needam, Special Adviser Media to the Rivers PDP Chairman, Brother Felix Obuah.
The party alleged that “it has no doubt that the recent trend of mass influx of suspected Boko Haram members into the states of the South-South and South-East of the country is not unconnected with the consistent and unhidden revolutionary activities, as well as the series of calls and incitement by Governor Rotimi Amaechi on people to revolt against the Federal Government.
“The PDP strongly believes the Rivers State Governor and his allies in the All Progressives Congress have visibly taken resolute position in doing everything possible to rubbish the image of President Jonathan’s administration, one of which is to use all mercenaries at their disposal to cause breach of public peace, killings, destruction and tension in the land.”
The party called on security agencies in the state to place the governor and his allies on security watch to checkmate the infiltration of these areas by dissidents.
According to the party, “We again urge all security agencies in the country to strictly place the Rivers State Governor, Rotimi Amaechi, and his allies in the APC under serious surveillance, as doing that will help in forestalling further movements of illegal immigrants and violent elements, as well as strengthens peace and security in the state and the country.”
On the recent arrest of some suspected Boko Haram agents in Abia State, “the PDP wonders why the mass movement of 486 suspected insurgents into the South came three days after the National Convention of the All Progressives Congress, APC, in Abuja, during which Governor Amaechi took time to address his fellow party members, as it was beamed live on national television, calling for revolution, charging them to be fully involved in the revolutionary movement which the APC is poised to carry out against the government in power.”
The PDP insisted that there could not be any explanation other than the fact that these suspects, who apparently had Port Harcourt as their final destination and discharge point, were brought in not without the consent of the Governor and enemies of the federal government.
The Party recalled that “during the APC’s registration exercise in Rivers State, Governor Amaechi masterminded similar incident where over 300 youths were moved in several buses from northern part of the country into the State, the purpose of which the PDP uncovered, was among other things, ostensibly, to register them as APC members in Rivers State. This mission to us is not prejudice to the fact that the Police had declared them suspected Boko Haram members.
“To us as a Party, what all of these portend is a situation of war declared by the Governor against the federal government and the masses, as well as a prelude to the anticipated total insecurity and wanton destruction of lives and properties by the Governor and the APC forces during the coming elections in the country.”
The PDP frowned on the alleged calls for anarchy in Nigeria by Amaechi and the APC and urged the people of Rivers State, the people of the South-East and South-South and other Nigerians to resist the evil as they were elements of doom.
The party advocated for stiff resistance against the governor’s alleged attempts to destroy the State for selfish political ambition, and the unpatriotic means of grabbing power employed by the APC.
The PDP praised the Police for their prompt and brilliant efforts in combating these crimes, the arrest of the earlier 300 suspects in Port Harcourt and the latest interception in Abia State of the 486 Rivers State bound suspects conveyed in 33 buses.
Reacting to the allegations, the Rivers State Commissioner for Information and Communication, Mrs. Ibim Semenitari stated, “Only yesterday, in preparation for this tragicomedy, the Rivers State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) accused Governor Amaechi of importing terrorists into the state and the region.
“They continued their diatribe by demanding that the governor of Rivers State be put under surveillance. The State Government wouldn’t have dignified the PDP’s display of ignorance with a response but for the fact that these accusations coupled with today’s actions are ominous signs of how far the PDP is willing to go in its quest to cling onto power by all means.”
Semenitari continued, “The antecedents of impunity on the part of the leadership of the PDP are instructive and the party’s desperation to harm and stop anyone they perceive as major threat to their crumpling electoral fortunes next year is no longer news. The detention attempt and incident at the Kano International Airport last week are still fresh in the minds of Nigerians. Also, the call to put Gov Amaechi under surveillance (or is it house arrest?) on the same day that PDP started effort to unseat the Governor of Adamawa State, His Excellency, Murtala Nyako, is enough indication of the script already written by a jittery PDP.
“It is sad that the insane minds of the authors of the PDP accusation are jeopardizing police investigations of the 486 travellers who were intercepted in Aba, Abia State, and who are still being screened. One only wishes that the PDP would address the issues of the insecurity in the country with as much fervor and vigour as it deploys towards witch-hunting its political opponents
“The River Government wishes to state that the world knows those who feather the nest of cultists and militants and for whom they are cannon fodder. Governor Amaechi’s position on cultism, violence and insecurity is clear as is his commitment to fighting poverty and improving the lives of our present and future generations. The Rivers State Government will not be deterred in its efforts to deliver good governance and democratic dividends to our people.”
The government appealed to all Rivers people, all members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and citizens in the state to remain calm in the face of the alleged provocations. “We call on the Security Agencies to exhibit professionalism in their cond uct of affairs. We appeal to all well meaning people in Nigeria and around the world to please call the PDP to order before they truncate our democracy.
“It appears to us that the PDP clearly has no interest in the peace and stability of Rivers state. We are mindful of these mischievous elements but continue to call for tolerance and eternal vigilance. We are certain that the God who reigns in the affairs of Rivers people will again deliver us from this evil and terror that stalks us at noon day.
