A female suicide bomber yesterday attacked a Military Quarter Guard along Biu Road in Gombe State, killing a soldier and the suicide bomber.
“The explosion occurred at about 11am along 301 Military Quarter Guard along Biu Road in Gombe,” a security source told the Hausa service of the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC).
“The woman had the explosive in her bag, but the thing went off prematurely. She was scattered by the explosion. Unluckily, she got a soldier as well,” the source disclosed.
According to him, although the woman could not reach her destination before the bomb went off, the military quarters was most likely her target.
The state police command confirmed the incident, saying that investigation was presently ongoing, adding that several people, mostly military personnel, sustained injuries in the blast.
However, a statement issued by the director of information, Defence Headquarters, Major General Chris Olukolade, said the lady bomber was intercepted by soldiers who acted on a tip-off.
The statement reads in part: “The lady suicide bomber who had primed herself with improvised explosive devices concealed under her Hijab was intercepted when troops, acting on intelligence report indicating that a terrorist group was plotting to attack barracks around Gombe using female suicide bombers, halted her, and as she was being searched the bomb detonated killing the lady.
“Unfortunately one of the troops conducting the search also died while another was wounded in the explosion”.
Gombe State has come under deadly attacks in recent times and the suicide attack in the state will be the first to be carried out by a woman.
The private residence of the state governor was attacked on Thursday as massive explosions rocked the building, killing two soldiers and wounding six others.
Meanwhile, the military disclosed that normal activities had since resumed in the barracks.
