Zambia's Minister of Gender and Child Development, Inonge Wina, has condemned the actions of Miriam Clark, the Zambian woman convicted of fraud in the UK, saying she has jeopardised the country's "good name"
Wina was commenting on the four-year conviction of Clark who, over a period of almost four years, siphoned nearly £2 million from the upmarket real estate firm where she has worked as a bookkeeper for 15 years.
“Some countries in the world have lost the confidence of some countries because of illegal activities of some members of those countries. So Zambia cannot afford to have characters that are masquerading as Zambians and jeopardising the good name of the country,” she said.
Wina added that, as a mother, Clark should have considered the welfare of her children before engaging in shady activities.
The 47 year-old Clark spent the money on first class flights between Zambia and the UK, funded her children’s private education and purchased numerous properties in Zambia and the UK.
To date, only £295,000 has been recovered.
As a bookkeeper for real estate company Dowley Turner Real Estate, she played an integral role in the business’s bank account and tax affairs.
