Mr Jimi Agbaje has won the governorship ticket of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Lagos State defeating a former Minister of State for Defence, Musiliu Obanikoro.
The result was announced at about 11:20pm local time on Monday.
While counting was going on, there was an uproar, as some persons tried to grab the ballot box, Channels Television’s political correspondent, Seun Okinbaloye reported.
It is one of the last results that were released in the governorship primary elections held across Nigeria
Meanwhile:
The Lagos governorship primary on Monday was a nail-biting one. In the end, Jimi Agbaje, who only joined the PDP this year, but had the backing of most of its major power brokers, defeated Musiliu Obanikoro, a former minister, polling 432 votes against Obanikoro’s 343 votes.
There was however controversy during the primary. It was earlier announced that only 806 delegates had been accredited to vote during the primary, but when the ballots were counted shortly after voting was concluded, it emerged that there were 863 total votes.
Some candidates immediately protested the situation, but the counting went on. At the end, Agbaje was declared winner of the election.
Unlike the APC primary last week when the major aspirants immediately threw their weight behind the winner, in the PDP election, Musiliu Obanikoro has kicked against the outcome. Addressing journalists around midnight at his campaign office in GRA Lagos, the former minister said that the result was completely tainted and not beneficial to the party. He described the whole process as a “sham” and vowed to keep fighting till it is upturned.
Here are a couple of tweets from Obanikoro, which were highlights of his speech at his campaign office.

“We will fight it and ensure that the right thing is done.” ~ Senator Obanikoro #PDPDecides#Lagos
“I have never seen an election were ballot papers are counted before sorting.” ~ Senator Obanikoro #PDPDecides #Lagos
“The whole process was compromised and predetermined.” ~ Senator Obanikoro #PDPDecides#Lagos
“As far as we are concerned, there was no election today. Hence no result.” ~ Senator Obanikoro#PDPDecides #Lagos
“No results should have been counted the moment number of votes cast exceeded number of accredited delegates.” ~ Senator Obanikoro
“Until the necessary corrections are made, we will not rest.” ~ Senator Obanikoro #PDPDecides#Lagos
“It is not over yet. Go home and do not take the laws into your hands.” ~ Senator Obanikoro#PDPDecides #Lagos
Mr Agbaje’s victory came after there were reported discrepancies between the number of delegates and the number of ballots counted.
While 806 delegates were recorded, 863 ballots were counted at the end of the election, a development that caused a disagreement.
