Immediate past Minister of State for Education, Chief Nyesom Wike, has risen above the odds to pick the governorship ticket of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Rivers State for the 2015 elections.
The battle-line has thus become set between him and House of Representatives chairman of the strategic Petroleum Resources (Downstream) Committee, Dr. Dakuku Peterside, who last Thursday emerged the candidate of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
As reported this morning by News Express, Rivers State people, under the aegis of Rivers State Elders and Leaders, at the weekend warned President Goodluck Jonathan and the leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) against the imposition of Wike, warning that it would likely spark a crisis in the party and possibly lead to its collapse in the state.
Apart from WIke’s controversial nature, another major issue counting against him is his coming from an area which ahs ruled the state for the past 16 years at a time when popular sentiment in the state favour power shift.
