Akpabio insists on sitting next to Amaechi as Governors’ Forum meets

The Nigeria Governors’ Forum are meeting today in Abuja as one unified body after several months of infighting which culminated in a split. While Gov. Rotimi Amaechi of Rivers led one faction, Jonah Jang of Plateau led the other.

The meeting today was not without opposition though. Bayelsa governor Seriake Dickson strongly opposed the meeting and said the outgoing governors like Amaechi who brought the divisions and tore the group apart should just leave and allow the incoming set organise the forum themselves.

At today’s meeting, less than half of the state’s were represented as at 10pm. The meeting is still ongoing though.

When Gov. Godswill Akpabio of Akwa Ibom came in, he asked that a chair be pulled for him beside Gov. Amaechi. The two men were fierce rivals in the buildup to the elections, with Akpabio standing as a counterforce to Amaechi as Chairman of the PDP Governors.

The meeting is taking place at the Lagos/Osun Hall of the Transcorp Hilton Hotel, Abuja, a departure from the past when it used to hold in one of the Governor’s lodges in Abuja.
