Malaysia has sentenced a Nigerian woman, Mary George Unazi, a 30 year old female student from Nigeria to death today after she was found guilty of trafficking 765.9gm of metamphetamine, also know as crystal meth, at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) four years ago. Indonesia recently executed four Nigerians for drug trafficking.
Judge Datuk Ghazali Cha made the decision after finding that the prosecution had managed to prove its case against 30-year-old Mary George Unazi, beyond a reasonable doubt. In his judgement, Ghazali said the accused’s defence, on the other hand, was merely a bare denial. He said the private college student had also failed to prove that the bag containing the drug was not hers.
Unazi was found to have committed the offence at the baggage claim area at the international arrival hall of KLIA at 3.10 pm on May 10, 2011. She was charged under Section 39B(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 which carries a mandatory death penalty upon conviction. Deputy public prosecutor Siti Noorbaya Jamil prosecuted, while Unazi was represented by lawyer Sangeet Kaur Deo
