5 Feared Dead As 2-storey Building Collapses In Anambra

5 Feared Dead As 2-storey Building Collapses In Anambra

Of six labourers who were working at the construction site of a two storey building which was already nearing construction, only one was lucky to come out alive as the building, without notice, suddenly collapsed on them.
The building which was being constructed at Ifite area of Awka, and meant to serve as a hostel for students of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, a source told LEADERSHIP gave in at about 1pm.
More pathetic however was the absence of any rescue team at the site of the building. Officials of Federal Road Safety Corp told journalists that contacts have been made to see how a crane can be brought to the site.
As at the time of filling this report, the only survivor of the collapse, a male has been rescued by kind hearted students of Nnamdi Azikiwe University who quickly constituted themselves to a rescue team, using bare hands to clear the rubbles.
Another victim was also said to have been rescued dead and taken to an undisclosed mortuary, while four other bodies trapped in the rubble cannot be reached by the students.
The location of the building which has no access road also made it difficult for any team to reach the collapsed building with their materials, just as it was gathered that the state director of State Emergency Management Agency, Mr Ijezie was still making arrangement with a construction company to hire a crane.
