A Georgia father is charged with murder in the death of his 22-month-old son after he allegedly left the child in a hot car for almost eight hours.
Justin Ross Harris, 33, of Marietta, was arrested and charged Wednesday with felony murder and cruelty to a child.
Cobb County police say 22-month-old Cooper Harris was pronounced dead at the scene.
Investigators said patrol officers were in the area of the Akers Mill Square shopping center Wednesday when they observed a crowd of people gathered around a blue Hyundai Tucson.
“When officers began to investigate, they observed a child lying on the ground,” Cobb County police said in a press release. “As officers began to render medical treatment to the 22-month-old male child, it was discovered that he was deceased after apparently being left unattended in his car seat inside the vehicle.”
Police say the father was supposed to take his son to day care around 8:30 that morning.
"Apparently, he forgot the child was in the car seat in the back of the automobile and went to work, left work sometime around 4 or 4:15," Sgt. Dana Pierce of the Cobb County Police Department told CNN affiliate WSB-TV.
Harris made the discovery after leaving work. He pulled into the shopping center, laid his son on the ground and started doing CPR in an attempt to save the child’s life, a witness told the affiliate.
Police said Harris was distressed and had to be physically restrained when he realized his son was dead.
