For the umpteenth time, the United State Government has dashed the hopes of Nigeria who were expecting to receive the Ebola experimental drug Zmapp for administration to patients infected with the disease.
Although, President Barrack Obama had in the past weeks said that Africa is not yet right to receive the drug after two US Doctors from Liberia were administered with the drug, but the manufacturer of the trial drug, Mapp Biopharmaceuticals announced subsequently that it has released the drug to all the African countries that requested for it, thereby raising the hope that Nigeria will soon receive the drug.
But the US Ambassador to Nigeria, James Entwistle told journalists on Monday that would not be giving the trial drug to Nigeria because there are not enough quantities available, adding that what is needed to be focus on primarily is isolation of the patients.
He stated this when he visited the Minister of Health, Prof. Onyebuchi Chukwu in Abuja,
According to Entwistle, “we’ll see down the road what is possible. But there are not huge quantities now. And we think the focus now needs to be on exactly what you are doing, the isolation ward, screening and especially important that now your government is doing a very good job on this is contact tracing.”
